Course Description

This class is designed for upper division students in a technical area who wish to learn the
methods of writing for their future careers.  As citizens and professionals many workplace
decisions involving writing have not only the rhetorical aspect to writing well and persuasively,
but also writing ethically.  So in addition to a goal or learning techné about writing in a field,
we will explore the rhetorical nature of the ethical questions that you will shortly be facing.

  In this class, you will:

   *  Investigate the definition of technical writing and the various subgenres of which it is
    comprised.
   *  Survey the place of technical writing in the workplace, including its values and ethical
    norms.
   *  Learn those skills that form the process of writing inquiry letters, proposals, progress
reports, all the way to final technical reports and presentations.
   *  This class will teach you to identify your audience and the most persuasive way to
communicate with that audience via audience analysis and process-oriented
    self-reflection.
   *  As we work together on these projects, we will learn about each other and how
to work productively in teams, so be prepared to spend good deal of time working
both alone and in groups this semester.
